How to Use Intra-Articular Corticosteroids Appropriately
نویسنده
چکیده
The action of corticosteroids is exerted through steroid-specific receptors in the cytoplasm of steroidresponsive tissues. This interaction results in the altered transcription of genes, leading to a wide variety of anti-inflammatory effects as well as other effects on the biology of articular cells that are of variable benefit. Corticosteroids are able to suppress inflammation at virtually all levels. The humeral effects of corticosteroids are due to the inhibition of phospholipase A and the decrease in production of proinflammatory mediators by both the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. They also inhibit many of the other inflammatory effects such as capillary dilation, migration of inflammatory cells, and the production and release of degradative enzymes.

Treatment of Staphylococcal Joint Infection in the Rabbit by Administration of Systemic Antibiotics and Intra-articular Corticosteroids
Background/objective: Despite the present routine treatment of septic arthritis with antibacterial agents, articular damage is persistent and frequently leads to loss of joint function. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of intra-articular corticosteroids added to systemic antibiotics in the treatment of experimental staphylococcal knee joint infection in rabbits. Methods: Thirty r...

The primary purpose of this review article is to discuss the role of diagnostic, corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid (HA) and platelet rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) and femoroacetabular impingement (FIA). These treatments play an important biological role in the non-operative management of these conditions. Two independent reviewers performed an search of PubMed for arti...

Intra-articular use of corticosteroids has become a recent focus (or re-focus) of attention in the Thoroughbred racing industry. The clinical use and scientific basis of intra-articular corticosteroid administration including catastrophic injury, articular cartilage degradation, and the development of osteoarthritis (OA) as well as the timing of injection relative to racing have been reviewed. ...
متن کاملTreatment Results after Intra-articular Injection of Corticosteroids in Patients with TMJ Arthritis
Arthritis is a common disease affecting the temporomandibular joint. The inflammation causes local pain and decreased function of the masticatory system. Temporomandibular joint arthritis can result from mechanical overloading, general autoimmune disease or individual susceptibility. The aim of this study was to investigate objective and subjective treatment results after intra-articular inject...

OBJECTIVES To show whether intra-articular steroid injections are effective in osteoarthritis; to determine factors that predict response; and to determine whether injection has a beneficial effect on muscle strength. METHODS Double blind, placebo controlled, crossover study in 59 patients with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee. Outcome measure-Primary outcome measure: change in visual a...
